GrameenPhone's Internet & the reality

GrameenPhone started to provide internet service in Bangladesh since few years and is the first to provide such service to people. It uses EDGE technology for this. EDGE is a GSM 2.5 technology but not 3G, often referred as pre-3G.

Grammen has picked-up customers quickly, although the service was available to only limited number of people. It’s very obvious that with increase of customers, they didn't put extra care on increase of band-width. The ultimate sufferers were the subscribers who are putting money in every month and day, but not getting a good speed at all.

You can get full details from below link.

  1. I am a P2 subscriber. that was so painful speed for me.
I am using a business solution postpaid connection.
in the website They say 8 kb minimum and 32kb speed vastable.
my average speed was 4 to 5 kb. I am unhappy. :-((

  2. Yes...u r right. There are no speed. I use nokia 3230 and p2 package . This is very bad for us.

  3. Why!!? i use gp modem with gp internet SIM. i get average 20 kbps. it is all time keep minimum 15kbps,& download limit is cross 40kbps some times..why u not get the speed??

  4. @ahsan and shetu, buddies... u gotta use an edge modem, at least a handset with edge modem to get that speed....

  5. I have an EDGE connection, using through EDGE Modem. Every time after logging frequency goes to zero, for which it hampers my all activity, If uninteruptted service could not be assured then I will ask the authority concern to stop the service.

  6. Gp should add 3G tecnology quickly cause gp is number 1 mobile operator in bangladesh.Thay never give low cost internet package. It's really painful 4 us.

  7. @Badhon: I don't know what u r saying 'bout, but I can assure u that inspite of having a gp modem with a gp sim, just like you, I didn't get sufficient speed. I never get speed more than 4-5 kbps. I don' know where iz the problem. I called the customer care, but they could not give me the solution. Yes, before having the gp modem, I heard about it, & heard that it provides speed upto 40 kbps, but........nothing to say.......................

  8. I think you all peoples r wright!it's the question How ?
GPRS/EDGE internet connection speed depend on how many user
use the BTS(Base Transmit Station)while you browsing or downloading !I use a Grameenphone provided USB EDGE modem and when I brows or download i get minimum 15KBPS in my house but when I am in motijheel or DU Campus i get only 4-5 KBPS or less speed.several times and several places I tested GP internet with my Dell laptop. But in rush hour or busy area quit its provided low speed. But in off hour or holiday i get more than 40 KBPS download speed.Every BTS have a limited Bandwidth and the more user use you will get less speed though Grameenphone may have enough internet bandwidth.
the Irony of fate they(GP) take the opportunity instead of increasing of BTS bandwidth or increasing number of BTS.
    Thanks everybody.

  9. i'm using Nokia N70 and Gp P-2 connection. but i'm getting 1to2.1KBPS only. i called customer care but they can't give me any solutttttttion. so thought P2 charged us 850/=BDT. So i left to use P2 and started to use Aktel 1GB by 316/=BDT and getting 2KBPS all time.

  10. sayem,
whats your location? getting 1/2 KBps is very slow comparing to what u r paying. u can also give a try for banglalink internet if u r in dhaka city. also configure your connection to get maximum speed.

  11. hasan,
thanks for your technical clarification, this will indeed help to understand some basic things.

gp's internet is getting good, so far i got some feedback. they have probably upgraded their bandwidth.

  12. hi, assalamualikum for all i m using GP business solution(post paid) it give me 1.0/Mb connection speed but download speed is 16-24/kb it is slow for our we want 1/Mb download rate. And GP take 978.Tk per month that is cost for our. So,we want 600.Tk per month.perhaps all with agree my opinion. bye.........

  13. GP is continuing the monopoly business && for unknown(?) reason our government can't reduce the charge of GP.

    ReplyDelete
  14. GP get profit of around 5000 crore taka every year & increasing onwards . But it doesnt reduce its tariff or give us the up-to-date service like 3.5 G service available in other countries, while charges us 850/- .This is so painful.GP is a traitor in telecom

    ReplyDelete
  15. While Indian telecom giant Airtel recently provides several Mbps , GP providing several KBps . :))

    Isnt it ridiculous ???

    ReplyDelete
  16. gp should reduce their cost of monthly package, its big indeed. since many of general subscribers are using p2 unlimited, they should think about it. the other two packages are useless i think.

unlimited should be within 300 taka per month with current speed.

    ReplyDelete
  17. michael,
gp is giving internet with edge which is 2.5g, and max speed is 230 kbps which is max around 20 Kilo-Bytes per second. bd government has not yet been allow license for 3G/3.5G, so i think even gp has the infrastructure they are unable to provide the service. also the bandwidth required for supporting such speed to each and every customer having 3g device, would be a real challenge.

we have to wait till all these are setup for public use.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 3G FiGI! dia kaj hobe na jodi na bandwidth charge 30000 taka(approximately)/per megabyte tika 5000 taka ba kachakachi namay na nia ashe.bujechen vaiera.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe the government should not be looking forward to give 3G licence rather they should think seriously about reducing the bandwidth price and ensuring that the existing service providers do provide the maximum. With the available infrastructure, operators like GP can provide a lot faster service but they are providing the least. I believe that the govt. should quit itself from becoming the sole authority to bring bandwidth and allow the others to be connencted to the submarine cable on their own. It should be stressed in everywhere and ensured otherwise whatever new technology is installed, they will be worthless.

  27. I have recently bought GP modem. I use my existing prepaid sim with P2 unlimited package. I live in Mugda , Dhaka . Here I am getting 12-16 KB/s on average but sometime I get more than 20 KB/s . You can't believe Yesterday I got 40 KB/s for 1 hour from 7:00 pm onward . If the speed is slow for any day I don't get less than 5 -6KB/s. At least not as of now. I am quite satisfied with the connection. Earlier I used Citycell Zoom. I used to get max 2 KB/s in it . So I replaced it with GP Internet.

Btw, Yesterday , I talked with a GP customer care executive about its speed . He said it depends on the location where you are staying at & the modem that you are using. He said if you use Huawei-GP Modem then you will get very good speed since they have developed GP Internet software within the Huawei Modem .(I don't know if he was just promoting the modem or the fact is right) He also requested me to wait till few months if I need more speed. They are trying to give much more speed then present with the EDGE Modem . They will soon get 3G network after Govt. approval. When 3G comes there will be separate 3G Modems for GP but at the same time as a subscriber of EDGE Internet we will get more speed then what we are getting right now. Even more than 50 KB/s or 100 KB/s in your EDGE Modem using regular GP Internet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. this is just a bogus idea to use huawei-gp modem for better speed without any question.

with 3g, if you want to get it's speed, you MUST have to have 3g-compatible modem, no doubt about that. with edge modem, you just CAN'T enjoy 3g speed, you may get a slight better speed, but thats for the bandwidth. this is a basic thing.

don't get fooled by gp personnel.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I use both GP Internet and Aktel Internet. In GP, I get 15 kbps (highest) and 9 kbps (highest) in Aktel. They both are cheater. They told us about 'high speed' internet. If 15/9 kbps is high speed, then what is 512 kbps, 1 mbps or 2 mbps internet?

    ReplyDelete
  35. aktel is just a cheat, don't use aktel.

for gp, raise a complain to gp customer-service and try to convince then, they should able to help you out.

  36. Good evening.

I don't know why govt. are not taking some positive steps such as reduce the bandwidth price, allow 3G, Put some minimum speed limit for the operator to provide to it's customers! And they said they came to form a digital Bangladesh. p6 is user friendly as u can't utilize the full benefit of p2 paying 976 tk.

i think citycell gives us a better speed by a reasonable price.

We should keep in mind mobile operator came Bangladesh to make money not for social well fare.

  38. I have used aktel earlier which was the 1gb package Avg-5kbps low-1kbps high-8kbps.Heard dat gp provide better internet service avg speed-15kbps.But,when i hooked up the P6 and using it currently i get lower speed than aktel 1gb package.GP P6 Avg-2kbps low-200bytes high-7kbps.I live in lalmatia.Aktel 1gb costed me 315tk and provided me better service than gp p6 of 345tk.Broadband connection are way better than any operator in bangladesh.Citycell also launched high speed ultra internet but too costly.TK4500 per month for 512kbps internet but the users got 22kbps avg and 20kbps minimum. It is so high cost for that bandwidth.1000-1500tk per month broadband service is a better option. But waiting for wimax to break the wall when gp and other shits will get some beating of their lifetime from wimax.600tk per month for a dedicated 128kbps connection or 16kbps minimum download speed is wayyy better.

  39. grameenphone has stopped p2 unlimited internet package for its pre paid users, pre paid users only have p5 and p6 packages which has 3 and 1 gb limit respectively, so no one use gp, it sucks, use aktel, they have 5gb package which costs only 750 taka, speed is about 10-12 KB

  46. hello,
I'm a gp p6 subscriber and i can proudly say that Grameenphone is providing really very good speed. It's about 2o kbps average. before subscribing to it i would never think of getting so much speed. I used citycell zoom with an Alcatel music phone and the speed was not really good . it was aboyt 8 to 10 kbps. But now I am having a problem with the service. that is how do iknow how many megabytes are left after i use it? is there any way to know how many Mbs are left? pls someone give me a reply before my 1GB get finished.

I wanna say that at tk 978 its truly not deserving to have any 2o kbps speed but i don know if you know it or not GP P6 package is giving that speed at tk 350/month . you say or not that's superb

  89. what the hell happened to grameen phone internet?i used to get 14-20 kilobytes download speed all day long before october 25th 2009.and browsing was a breeze with grameen phone.but after october 25 th for some unknown reason grameen phone internet is giving me so slow download speed all day long.

i can only get 2-4 kilobytes download speed and that also is not stable.except a few times all most always when i try to download any file from rapidshare or any other source download gets broken only after a few minutes.

even when i just browse websites there seems to be packet loss or something like that.data flow seems goes like this start-stop start -stop and sometime page reloads with me refreshing the page.

  91. I am using AKTEL's unlimited (post-paid) package costing Tk. 825 with VAT per month. With Nokia n73, I get speeds between 15-25KB/s. However, it took me about 40hrs to download a 1.4GB movie (Transformers 2!) as the speed fluctuates often.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Correction - the time for the 1.4GB download was 32 hours (not 40hrs) and the average download rate was 12.5KB/s.

  97. I agree with shamim vai. Something really bad must be happening with their internet service( like switching their internal infrastructure from ericsson to huawei perhaps) or they are not capable to handle the bandwidth requirement load anymore. From last december i have seen a drastic degradation of their average bandwidth delivery from 20-30kBps to 4-5kBps. And sometimes even lower. It almost feels like the ancient bttb dialup service. Download has almost become impossible for frequent disconnection in data flow. I am using edge p6 on my nokia 3100c and connecting to it from my laptop using bluetooth. I live in east nasirabad ctg. Any suggestion for an similiar alternative would be much appreciated. I am fed up with this crap. Thanks.

I get constant 124KB/s on a 1Mbps dedicated, unlimited mobile broadband line at only the equivalent of 1000 taka (using Huawei E220). There are lines using the same modem that can reach 3.4 Mbps, and another modem which is currently peaking at 7 Mbps.

what modem u use? whats your os? i guess u don't use blue-tooth for the connection.

do u use mobile-phone's own software (like pc-suite for nokia) to connect to internet or the connection is created manually?

can u try disabling start-up programs from start menu->run->msconfig and try after a fresh restart?

for speed thing, if u get average 25 kilo-bytes/second during download, thats indeed a good speed.

  108. Hi all,
I use GP internet with EDGE modem, you know the one from Update company, been using it for about 3 yrs now. When I use this in Mohammadpur, I get speeds around 10kBps(80kbps), but when I use it at home in Uttara Sec 10, I never get more than 3.5kBps(28kbps). Since I always use it in Uttara, it's so annoying. So is there any solution to this?
I was thinking about getting Qubee or Banglalion but neither have coverage in Sec 10. Sad. So, what should I do? I'm not willing to take broadband, so is there any wireless solution?
    Thanks everyone.

  109. GP is a robber. There's no suitable internet package for pre-paid customers.
p5 package costs 805tk (+vat)(3GB) where p2 package is 970tk but unlimited.I get a good speed from 10 to 30kbps using gp-internet but p5 or p6 package does not satisfy me(high cost but restricted usage).Banglalink p2 package is good but i am afraid abot the speed.Did any one use banglalink net? How speed it renders?

  113. I m using GP,as far i know,GP net is the best of all but lacks suitable packages. If we wanna browse a good amount in prepaid package, its too difficult. All of us know that about the amount of pre-paid & post-paid customers.

I dont wanna say about other operators. In kalabagan a broadband provider named "DCL",is a good internet provider.I hope all areas should have a net provider like "DCL".Its speed & customers managemrnt is quite good.

  114. hey..guys..i have a free advice.. if you can afford get 1 zoom ultra 512kbps..at the moment i get speed averaging from 428-638kbps..however the max i got upto now is just 987kbps..itz great ..wireless plug & play..video streaming..without buffering..i used to use GP but it totally su****.. so if you can afford get 1 zoom ultra and that will fix all your problems regarding internet speed

    ReplyDelete
  115. hey man are you gone crazy !!!!! zone ultra package fee is so high.5GB=3500+vat can you imagine that.
Get wimax just 2500 tk 512 kbps unlimited.

    ReplyDelete
  116. i want to know all kind gp internet service pakage

    ReplyDelete
  117. All the operators are cheater. They are using the tricks of bit and Bite to allure customers.Firstly GP modem used to show the connection speed in KB/s but New Gp modem shows it in Kb/s. Can you imazine you are thinking your speed as in KB/s as usual. And as per Citycell zoom is concerned they claim their speed as 512Kb/s as maximum. But transform it in KB/s. It will be around 50KB/s. And you will get to spend 3500tk for that. With 1Gb package you will have 150Kb/s maximum. Which is about 15KB/s.In this respect I will say GP is the best. Because I get speed of 25KB/s=250kb/s average living here in Comilla.Sometimes it goes about 40-50KB/s=400-500kb/s which is really good. I suggest anyone to browse the internet using some tricks when there is less traffic. And the time would be 9-11a.m. and 3-5P.M. Really amazing speed during the time. You can use download accelerator to download Plus.It enhance the speed near to 7times.You may get amazed when you will see the speed 60-70KB/s higest during the time with download accelerator. So, use the tricks. O, one thing modem doesn't matter.

  118. hey any one know when gp will launch 3g.please reply my question.

    ReplyDelete
  119. i was hearing about this like the license to be given in june, and i guess operators are ready with infrastructure, so they should be able to provide that within next 2 months.

    ReplyDelete
  120. wimax is not available in my area plus zoom ultra is now 50% less which means => 3500 => 1750tk

  121. Well I'm aware that the original post is more than 2 yrs old, yet the problem still exists and will continue to exist.

I'm also a P2 subscriber (unlimited use). Stat for this month: 170 MB download in 16 days and I remain connected for more than 12 hrs a day. This has been the scenario for at least 6 months. I complained a few times but they say everything is OK, no problem.

GP is the only operator in Bangladesh which doesn't care about good will.

    ReplyDelete
  122. So horrible service they provide. Where there is 4G technology starting all over the world GP still providing 2.5G. I think EDGE is enough to satisfy Bangladeshi peoples if they could provide sufficient bandwidth.

some of you guys get 2-4 kbps speed but I get enjoyed when I get 1kbps speed because 90% time I get below 1kbps and maximum times just few hundreds bytes. Even to load this post it took about 4 minutes for me.

Its really very very funny. GP in their advertisement always says they are bringing light to peoples. But, my opinion is this kinds of powerless light will just make our peoples blind. Every night I struggle hard to upload 5-6Kb files. I think if I work in agriculture field this will be more profitable for me than IT service with such internet. Maybe some of you guys will ask me why I don't get broadband internet. My 3 months experience of 256Kbps connection by BDT 2000 per month gave me below 1kbps upload speed always.

So, where are we now? Is this the sign of our Digital Bangladesh? I think govtment either blind on IT or dreaming to make digital Bangladesh in just words without strong communication technology. Otherwise those kinds of internet services shouldn't still permitted in country.

So, my opinion don't use GP internet. Don't waste your time and do something else. And my request to GP please stop emitting such kinds of lights of IT because your light intensity will make people's IT life really blind.

  123. Bangladesh's Post and Telecommunications Minister has confirmed that the country will offer 3G licenses by the end of August, although the exact method allocating the licenses is still being worked out by the regulator. "Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is formulating required guidelines which will set the process for awarding 3G licenses," Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed Raju told the Chinese Xinhua news agency. Although the details are still being worked out, an official confirmed that there would be at least four licenses made available. The country has been promising to award 3G licenses since 2008, although political issues with the transition of the government was held responsible for most of the delay. "It is estimated that there are over 6 million mobile internet users and already today 15 percent of the mobile handsets used in Bangladesh market are 3G enabled," Arun Bansal, managing director of the Ericsson Bangladesh said last May. The country currently has six operators - and according to figures from the Mobile World, ended Q1 of this year with just over 55 million mobile subscribers - which is still a population penetration level of around 35%. Also worth noting is that while the country has six operators, only four of them are of any significant scale, Grameenphone (23.9m), Banglalink (14.2m) and Aktel (11.8m) and finally, Warid Telecom (2.9m). The two remaining long term incumbents, Citycell and Teletalk add up to 2.9 million customers between them.

  124. @Sujan,
even though i am not a gp fan, i still have to say, this shouldn't been happened for you. i think there might be some issue with your internet configuration or your location or something. you may help yourself considering following issues:

whats your exact location and how is the network signal there in your phone, exactly from where you are connecting?
do u use phone or modem? which one? does it have edge?
is there electrical/magnetic equipments near your phone/modem? you need to get rid of them
whats your computer and OS? go to "msconfig" then "startup" tab clear all items except virus-scan on-access scanner and restart computer?
there may be viruses in your computer. get a latest anti-virus installed, update latest definition and engine, check every single disks
if required do a clean os installed
    turn-off usb-cd auto-run
uninstall unnecessary software that you don't need at all but somehow got installed and remain same
turn-off auto-update feature of your windows and of all the software that has it by default

lets try above procedure and let us know whether you are getting a better speed now or not.

  130. Hi Ruby, I understand ur problem. i faced the same problem as everyone is facing. I discussed this matter with the GP engineer also. They told me that the normal GP modem or other phone modems are GPRS class 12 and cannot give you maximum speed. Some new model Nokia set is giving GPRS Class 32 modem built in. If u use such modem u will get beter result as i am getting. also try to use IDM for downloading anything.

And you should understand the difference between KBps and kbps

    ReplyDelete
  135. which one is better Citycell or GP
    for using internet in laptop

    ReplyDelete
  136. Citycell is definitely good because it's stable, however bit costly over GP. if you do not download too much, you can go for Citycell provided that your area is under its network and is good.

    ReplyDelete
  137. i want to knw which one gives more speed
for browsing as well as downloading

    ReplyDelete
  138. Citycell's max speed is 512kbps, but its costly. for cost, pls see package information on Citycell's website.
GP's max speed is 253kbps (thats the EDGE max speed), its 920 taka/month unlimited.

if you need more speed in browsing and downloading, then u have to go for Citycell if cost is not factor.

as an alternate thought, if you do not move frequently, you may consider using wimax. it will give you maximum speed, 2000kbps even which is anyway more than GP or Citycell.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Actually I live aboard and I am coming to Bangladesh for vacation

  142. here is some suggestions:
    > can u check the signal from the exact location of your modem? just put your mobile phone and check the signal. also check patiently whether the signal is dropped suddenly. if the signal is not good, then try use other operator SIM
    > for internet connection in PC through a wireless modem (either mobile phone or dedicated modem) always try to keep the area of your device clean and make sure you do not physically move near it or touch it. better if you can use an USB extension cable and connect your device and keep it away from you or at a place which is clean and remains static. try to keep the device far from your body for all the time you use internet
    > check your computer's start-up programs and disable as many possible (check whatever is really necessary for you to be available at start-up). for me, i've disabled all the programs except virus-scan
    > check your computer's windows services and disable the services not necessary or connect to internet automatically (like windows update service)
    > update your OS, try to use Windows Vista or 7
    > DO NOT use utorrent and browsing at a time. either exit from utorrent (or any other torrent program) and then continue browsing and vice-versa. sometime even if you exit utorrent, it remains in the memory, open task-manager and do "end process" after selecting utorrent

i believe, if you follow above procedures, you should be able to get at least some improvement in your internet experience.

  143. GP is the most cheater!!!I bought a 3g edge modem with internet SIM. I get 5 kilo Bites max and some times it supplies less than 200 bits/sec. Even sometimes it shows 00 kbps. The interesting cheating is ” Statics may not be accurate! ” It shows many bits per second…….But if I begin to download something…..the original speed shows max 5kB …………What a fool they make us!Another cheating is when I complain at 121 a sweet(!)voice receives the phone …….. delayed answering passing the time with the useless information……About after 10 minutes they say the same memorized tune……..How can I get ride of it? Is it the symbol of digital Bangladesh? I cannot able to use 1 GB per month cause of its low speed……..
